Having second thoughts about a two-tone color scheme for your roof and siding?
Visualizing color combinations for your home’s exterior is not easy for some of us. Sometimes, what looks good on a pair of color swatches doesn’t necessarily look good on the final installation. Also, while some of us can perform siding repair, others are not so gifted with the ability to vividly imagine, let alone draw detailed illustrations to express what they really want.

Fortunately, there’s the Home Color Tool, an online visualization tool from James Hardie® that will help you mix and match siding and roofing colors to get that perfect two-tone color combination.
To begin using the Home Color Tool, you must enter your zip code – this helps the tool identify available colors and James Hardie contractors in your area. We also recommend that you log in to or create a free James Hardie My Idea Center account before proceeding. Afterwards, your color combination is four easy steps away:
- Choose the main color. This will be the dominant color you will use for your palette. It is worth noting that when choosing color combinations for your vinyl siding, one of the colors will be the dominant one; in two-tone combinations, the dominant color would be about 70%. You can either choose the colors manually or use the menu at the top of the page to select popular color groupings: warm, fresh, cool, dark, light and neutral.
- Choose a home style. Select the illustrated architecture style that is closest to your home’s.
- Choose accents. This is where the other 30% goes. You can choose colors to match your dominant color selection. If the main color is not working, you can always select a different one (maybe a darker trim would work with lighter accents?). James Hardie’s color experts had also curated some of the popular combinations under the Curated Palettes tab. You can use these as a starting point if you need some inspiration. Additional options include adding different colors for the roof, windows and front door.
- Save and share. Once you find that perfect two-tone combination, save it for future reference by saving it into My Idea Center. You can also share it onto your Facebook timeline or send a link via email. Clicking on “Get a Quote” also lets you send your saved palette to up to three siding contractors in Lincoln, NE, who will later get in touch with you with a quotation.
