Professional Flat Roofing Service
Flat roofs are tough but have one glaring Achilles’ heel: a serious lack of drainage. Because they’re not sloped, flat roofs struggle to shed water like other types of roofs. Over time, this water can build up and cause serious damage to your flat roof.

Signs That You Need Flat Roof Repair
Repairs are obviously in order if you’ve got a big hole in your roof. Sometimes, though, the signs aren’t so apparent.
You need flat roof repair if you spot:
- Splitting and cracking. Cracks can develop in the roof if your home’s foundation is shifting.
- Algae in puddles of standing water. The presence of algae means that water has been sitting there for a long time.
- Shrinkage, tears, splits, and punctures. These can develop from weather exposure and UV rays.
Should You Have Your Flat Roof Repaired or Replaced?
We get this question a lot at Nelson Contracting. Full roof replacements are expensive but are sometimes the best option.
We may recommend a full replacement if:
- Water won’t drain from your roof at all
- Your roof has serious damage that would be costly and time consuming to repair
- Your roof is more than 25 years old
Types of Flat Roofing
If you’ve opted for a replacement, you’ll have quite a few types of flat roofs to consider, including the following:
- Built-up roofing (BUR): Built-up roofing features layers of asphalt and fiberglass or felt topped with gravel. These roofs can last for about 30 years.
- Concrete: Concrete is a fine choice if you want a roof to withstand our toughest Nebraska storms. Concrete roofs are so tough that they can last 50 years or more. Their only drawback is high porosity.
- Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO): TPO is a single-ply roofing membrane made of plastic and rubber. It’s easy to install and highly resistant to UV rays. TPO roofs last for up to 30 years. The main downside is that they don’t resist foot traffic well.
- Modified bitumen: Modified bitumen roofs consist of asphalt mixed with plastic or rubber for better flexibility. Experts install this type of roofing with adhesives or heat. Modified bitumen roofs last for around 20 years. They need regular inspections to check for leaks.
- EDPM: Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EDPM) roofing is made from synthetic rubber. It’s weather resistant and a great pick for extreme temperatures. Like concrete, EDPM roofs can last for around 50 years. They’re susceptible to shrinkage, though, which could cause leaks.
- Green roofs: If you want a truly unique roof, go green. Green roofs incorporate soil and plants over a single-ply membrane.
- Metal: Metal roofs are super-tough and, like EDPM and concrete, last 50 years or more. They can develop rust if not maintained, though.
